Aurora Over Alaska (4.04)

Between 60 and 1000 kms are the lights of the auroras. They are caused by solar shockwaves that cause both protons and electrons to strike the Earth's atmospheric molecules. Around Earth's magnetic poles, the aurora appears to be circular. this picture was taken at the Bear Lakes, Alaska in January 2005. It won the Wiki Commons Picture of the Year in 2006.
